Amidships

Return To Index

Amidships is a nautical term referring to the absolute center of a vessel, located halfway between the bow (front) and stern (rear), and often halfway between the port and starboard sides. It signifies the longitudinal centerline or the mid-point of a ship's length, crucial for cargo, balance, and helmsman commands.

Key Aspects of Amidships:
Location: Situated at the middle portion of the vessel.

Helm Command: "Rudder amidships" or "midships" commands the helmsman to place the rudder at 0° on the centerline.

Stability: This area is generally considered the most stable part of a vessel.

Usage: Used to describe the location of objects, structural elements, or damage (e.g., "hit amidships").
