A deck is the permanent horizontal covering over a sailboat’s hull, serving as the main exterior floor, workspace, and structural roof. It acts as a platform for operating sails, rigging, and provides access to the vessel while protecting the interior, often featuring non-slip surfaces for safety.

Common Deck-Related Terms
Foredeck: The section of the deck located forward of the mast (on a sailboat) or the cockpit.

Aft Deck / Afterdeck: The open deck area toward the stern (the back) of the boat.

Weather Deck: Any deck that is exposed to the outside elements and lacks overhead protection.

Main Deck: The principal deck of a vessel. On many ships, it is the highest deck of the hull.

Flush Deck: A deck that runs continuously from the bow to the stern without any raised structures.

Quarterdeck: The part of the upper deck behind the mainmast, traditionally where the captain commands the vessel.

Poop Deck: A raised deck located at the very back (stern) of the ship, forming the roof of the after cabin.

Well Deck: An exposed deck that is lower than the decks situated in front of or behind it.

Bridge Deck: The deck area that includes the helm and navigation station.
