Embayed

Return To Index

Embayed describes a dangerous sailing condition where a vessel is trapped between two capes or headlands, with the wind blowing directly onshore. It restricts a ship's ability to maneuver, making it difficult to turn away from the land and escape to open water.

Key Aspects of Being Embayed:
The Trap: The vessel is caught in a bay, cove, or indentation in the coastline.

Onshore Wind: The primary danger is that the wind, known as a "lee shore" situation, is blowing from the sea towards the land.

Reduced Maneuverability: Particularly dangerous for sailing ships, especially those that sail poorly to windward, as they cannot steer away from the shore.

Context: It implies a high risk of being pushed onto the beach, rocks, or being forced to anchor in a precarious spot.
