Forepeak
Return To Index
A forepeak is the extreme forward, lowest compartment inside a vessel's bow, typically located ahead of the collision bulkhead. It is primarily used for storing anchor gear, chain, rope, or sails. In many sailing yachts and catamarans, this space can be used for extra storage, a workshop, or small crew cabins.
Key Aspects of the Forepeak:
Location: The very tip of the boat's bow, under the foredeck.
Purpose: Primarily used as a storage compartment, anchor chain locker, or a ballast tank for adjusting the boat's trim.
Structure: It is often a reinforced compartment designed to withstand high pressure at the bow, separated from the rest of the ship by a watertight "forepeak bulkhead".
Usage: While often for storage, in some designs, it can be a small, basic cabin (sometimes called a "forepeak cabin" or "skipper cabin") for additional crew.
On catamarans, there are two forepeaks (one in each bow) that are highly useful for storage, workshops, or even extra, small bathrooms.
