Fix
Return To Index
A fix is the precise position of a vessel, determined at a specific time by the intersection of two or more lines of position (LOPs). These lines are typically generated by compass bearings to landmarks, GPS coordinates, or celestial observations. A fix is plotted on a chart as a small circle with the time marked.
Key Aspects of a Fix:
Accuracy: It confirms the vessel's exact location, crucial for navigating safely near hazards.
Method: Commonly, a visual fix is taken by measuring bearings to two or more known objects using a compass.
Representation: In navigation, it is marked on a chart as a circle.
Vs. Estimated Position: Unlike a dead reckoning position (DR), which is estimated, a fix is a confirmed location.
