A marine flare is a pyrotechnic or electronic visual distress signal used in sailing to alert rescuers to an emergency. They produce bright red light or orange smoke to signal location, typically valid for 42–48 months, and must be stored in dry, accessible locations. Common types include handheld flares, parachute flares, and electronic LED alternatives.

Key Types and Usage:
Handheld Flare: Produces intense light for close-range signaling, lasting around 60 seconds to 3 minutes.
Parachute Flare: Rockets that fly up to 300m high, staying aloft for ~40 seconds for long-range, day or night visibility, visible up to 28 miles.

Smoke Signal: Orange smoke specifically designed for daytime location marking to aircraft or vessels.

Electronic Flare (E-Flare): Battery-powered LED devices that flash the SOS signal, offering long-lasting operation without fire risk.
