IMO (International Maritime Organization)

Return To Index

In a sailing context, IMO typically refers to the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for the safety, security, and environmental performance of international shipping.

Key IMO Terms for Sailors
While the IMO primarily regulates large commercial vessels, its standards and identification systems often apply to yachts and fishing boats as well:

IMO Number: A unique seven-digit identifier assigned to a vessel that stays with it for its entire life, regardless of changes in name, owner, or flag. It is mandatory for passenger ships over 100 gross tons and cargo ships over 300 gross tons.

IMO Ship Types: The IMO provides official definitions for various vessels in its treaties, such as Passenger Ships (carrying more than 12 passengers) and Bulk Carriers.

IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP): A standardized set of English phrases used to bypass language barriers and ensure clear navigational communication between ships and shore.
