Outboard

Return To Index

An outboard is a portable or detachable propulsion system mounted externally on a boat's transom, providing steering and power. It includes an engine, propeller, and gear case as one unit, often used for auxiliary power on sailboats and primary power on smaller motorboats. Key components include the tiller/throttle, transom bracket, and skeg.

Key Components & Concepts:
Transom: The flat, reinforced panel across the stern (back) of the boat where the outboard is mounted.

Trim/Tilt: The mechanism that raises the engine out of the water or adjusts its angle relative to the transom to improve performance.

Skeg: The lowest part of the outboard, protecting the propeller and aiding steering.

Tiller: The handle used for steering and throttle control (common on smaller outboards).

Propeller (Prop): The rotating blades that push the boat.
