Upstream

Return To Index

Upstream sailing refers to navigating a vessel against the flow of a river, current, or tide. It requires greater engine power or effort, as the boat moves towards the source of the water. Key rules include keeping red buoys on the starboard (right) side (Red Right Returning) to ensure safe navigation.

Key Characteristics & Tips
Navigation: When returning from open water to inland waterways, keep red markers to your right and green to your left.

Steering: Steering is generally more responsive because the current pushes against the bow, though it requires constant, attentive maneuvering.

Safety: The boat moves slower relative to the land, often requiring more throttle to maintain control.

Hazards: Watch for debris floating downstream and look for "V" shapes in the water that indicate underwater obstacles.
