Daysailer

Return To Index

A daysailer is a small-to-medium-sized sailboat designed for short trips, casual sailing, or racing, usually lacking significant overnight accommodations. Typically 14 to 25+ feet, they feature a large open cockpit for seating, simple rigging for ease of handling, and trailerable designs. They offer a fun, fast, and accessible sailing experience.

Key Characteristics
Design & Usage: Primarily for pleasure, afternoon outings, and quick assembly/launching.

Cockpit: Large and open, prioritizing seating over cabin space.

Cuddy Cabin: Many models, such as the classic 16’ 9” O'Day Day Sailer, feature a small cabin (cuddy) forward, useful for storage or quick shelter, but generally not for sleeping.

Rigging: Simple, often a sloop rig (main and jib), designed for easy handling by one or two people.

Performance: Designed to be agile and responsive. Many have centerboards (easier for trailering) or fixed keels.

Types: Ranges from small, open dinghies to elegant, modern dayboats with minimal amenities.
